Their report is but the first of many to appear in medical journals, soon to be followed by the worldwide news media. You may have seen the reports yourself in newspapers, magazines or on TV news. At least 10 rigorous clinical trials document results like these:
Dramatic blood pressure reductions: top ten percentile of results averaging 36 points systolic and 20 points diastolic...
Average overall reductions of a significant 14 points systolic over 8 points diastolic...
Extremely high response rate: 82% of even resistant hypertensives responded to this method in a clinical trial published in the American Journal of Hypertension in June 2003...
Cumulative effects that continue building in both amount and duration over time. The results are significant, lasting and accumulating drops in blood pressure...
The means to avoid, reduce or even eliminate the need for potentially dangerous blood pressure medications and their side effects...
Life-enhancing related benefits like stress and anxiety relief, better sleep, increased energy and much more. In fact, this technique is often the beginning of a new and healthier lifestyle.
Here's a short extract from one of the clinical trials:
"RESULTS: BP reduction in the device group [slow breathing device] was significantly greater than a predetermined 'clinically meaningful threshold' of 10.0, 5.0 and 6.7 mm Hg for the systolic BP..."
American Journal of Hypertension
16 June 2003
In fact, they obtained systolic blood pressure reductions averaging 15.2 points in this particular study. You can access these report for yourself through my Clinical Trials page.
They've certainly made a big difference my life and in the lives of many others. In fact, the slow breathing device the doctors developed from their research has since helped tens of thousands of people to lower their blood pressure naturally and beat hypertension.
But the device itself is merely a learning tool... the real power to lower blood pressure comes from within you.
The circulatory and respiratory systems (and the nervous system too) are closely connected and work in parallel: where one goes the other follows.
When your heart rate and blood pressure rise, your breathing rate goes up in unison...
So doesn't it follow that your heart rate and blood pressure go down when your breathing slows?
Breathing affects every part of our system. And it's not just the rate of breathing that's important; how long and how deeply we inhale and exhale influence blood gas levels, which in turn affect blood chemistry with direct and dramatic significance to our blood pressure.
"People thought reactivity to stress is why blood pressure went up... But it may be they were just holding their breath.
When you're not breathing deeply, your body doesn't properly rid itself of carbon dioxide. Excess carbon dioxide makes your system acidic so your body compensates by upping sodium levels, which in turn can raise blood pressure.
The heart rate speeds up, arteries constrict, blood pressure, blood sugar and respiration increase and gastrointestinal activity decreases."
Margaret A. Chesney, PhD
Professor of Medicine
University of Maryland School of Medicine
It all adds up to the fact that breathing is one of your body's most powerful regulators of blood pressure.
The power of breathing to affect the heart and blood pressure has been known for a long time but the slow breathing doctors did something new... they set about discovering the most effective way of harnessing and optimizing this power.
Over the following years, they along with other medical experts carried out the most rigorous testing of any natural blood pressure treatment ever... testing that has been published for debate in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals.
In fact, their methods even won FDA approval. For this they had to meet these these standards of scientific credibility:
Clinical proof using the same rigorous testing methods as used for drugs: randomized, double-blind trials...
Repetition: slow breathing has proved itself in at least 10 formal clinical trials and countless other studies of all types...
Finally, testing methods and results had to be published in medical journals for review by other medical professionals. Slow breathing research has been published in respected journals around the world including:
- Journal
of Human
Hypertension
- American
Journal of Hypertension
- Journal
of
Clinical Hypertension
- Harefuah
(Israel)
- Hypertension
(Italy)
- The
Lancet (U.K.)
- Circulation
(journal of the American Heart Association)
- and many others
With these credentials, it’s no surprise that leading health organizations either endorse and/or teach slow breathing. These include Harvard Medical School, The Mayo Clinic, Rush-Presbyterian Hospital, the American Heart Association and many more.
"The deep breathing exercises can help lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure... Slow, deep breathing reduces activity in the part of the nervous system that controls blood pressure, which allows blood pressure to return to normal."
Sheldon G. Sheps, M.D.
Mayo Clinic Emeritus Hypertension Specialist
Research by the Center for Preventive Cardiology in Maryland and published at the annual convention of the American Society of Hypertension reports that "listening to half an hour of music each day may significantly lower your blood pressure".
What's so surprising about that? - you may ask. Music therapy has been used for health purposes for decades.
That's true, but it had very little solid, scientific backing.
But now for the first time in the Maryland study they were able to accurately measure changes in the body that occur while listening to music.
They found that listening to enjoyable, relaxing music was able to expand blood vessels by an average of 26%.
The result is a dramatic increase in blood flow that not only lowers blood pressure but also reduces build up of cholesterol and other harmful substances. In fact, TIMESONLINE reported the same news with the headline: "Music Can Lower Cholesterol Levels".
Detecting and measuring blood vessel expansion was not the only first for the Maryland study. The findings also made it possible to to explain...
They found that listening to music actually stimulates production of nitric oxide, a gas in the body responsible for numerous health benefits... even life itself. One of the many important roles of nitric oxide is to regulate blood pressure by triggering the contricting and expansion of blood vessels.
As a matter of fact, the way we breathe also helps to determine nitric oxide levels. In this way, breathing and music make ideal partners. You can read much more about the wonders of nitric oxide in the next page, "How it Works".
Medical experts in Italy have for a long time experimented with music as an antidote to hypertension. They've shown that relaxing to music decreases theta activity and increases alpha, a state associated with deep but alert relaxation and stress reduction.
"Listening to music is soothing and has often been associated with controlling patient-reported pain or anxiety and acutely reducing blood pressure. We are excited about the positive implications for both patients and physicians, who can now confidently explore music listening as a safe, effective, non-pharmacological treatment option..."
Pietro A. Modesti, M.D. PhD
University of Florence, Italy
These effects of music are well known but the Italians have taken their work to a new level: One of the under-reported aspects of these music trials (both in Maryland as well as in Italy) is that participants listened to music "while practicing slow, controlled breathing exercises".
Listening to music has powerful effects... but they tend to be only temporary. Just hours later your stress levels and blood pressure could be pegging out again.
Slow breathing has dramatic and lasting benefits...but it can be tedious, which cancels out the benefits. In fact, slow breathing requires relaxation to be effective. The more relaxed you are, the greater the benefits.
What's more, it's very difficult to maintain a steady, controlled style of breathing without some form of guidance, especially at the start (and all the while maintaining a state of deep relaxation?).
But put them together and you not only solve all these issues - and get the benefits of both - but you create something entirely unique and greater than just the sum of two parts...
BreatheEasy uses the very same clinically-proven breathing techniques in a unique guided breathing track woven into some of the the world's most beautiful and relaxing music. Real music, for a world of difference as you will discover below.
Listening to music is relaxing, which we know is important for maximizing the benefits from slow breathing...
It's also enjoyable, which makes you come back for more and thus indirectly improves results...
And we can also take comfort in knowing that enjoying music is not just in the mind. It exerts its own very real powers on our blood pressure as well as our overall health...
But there's another way that music plays a crucial role in the slow breathing with music "system". It works through a natural process that experts describe this way:
What this means is that our body's internal rhythms such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and even brain waves are influenced or modulated by external rhythms. At one extreme this could be the orbits of the moon and planets and at the other extreme the rhythm of a boat's oars dipping into and out of the water. In other words...
This is why fast, vibrant music makes us want to get up and dance and slow music relaxes us. That's not rocket science but in the BreatheEasy System I use this natural tendency for body/music synergy by carefully selecting and editing the music tracks to reinforce the desired breathing rate and pattern.
So music plays a dual role in the system: While relaxing you it also acts to influence your breathing and thus reinforce the guided breathing track.
As you progress through the program you rely less on the breathing track and more upon the beat and rhythm of the music as well as the internal rhythms that begin to develop within you. In this way you will eventually be able to practice slow breathing with your own music or any other way that you enjoy relaxing.
This makes BreatheEasy probably the only blood pressure remedy/program that develops complete independence from external resources. This builds confidence. You surely can't say that about drugs, supplements or special diets!
In the box below you can read comments and feedback from BreatheEasy users. Some correspondence stretches over a year or more and you can see that these are not merely temporary effects or the result of some placebo effect.
As with all user comments on this website, full documentation is on file in accordance with FTC regulation.
NOTE: No treatment is 100% effective. Beware of anyone claiming otherwise. These examples are published to show what is possible with the BreatheEasy System and what real people do achieve. You may not get the same results.
" I checked out various stress reduction breathing programs including "Resperate" ($299), Heartmath's "emwave"($199), and "Breatheasy" ($47*). I subsequently bought "Breatheasy" because of its ease of use and varied music -- very simple, very functional, very relaxing. Just listen, breath along, and enjoy."
"I use it regularly, am impressed with the results, and recommend it to others. Moreover, at a fraction of what other programs charge and with an unconditional 6 month money-back guarantee, what's not to like?"

"I've been using your program for several months now and I'm absolutely hooked on it. My doctor is amazed how well I have reduced my BP without the use of drugs."
"I was borderline high when I started and am now back in the 120/75 range. Not bad for a 60 year old male that does not exercise! This kind of healthcare is priceless."

UPDATE: Sept. 25, 2009...
I am still using the program daily and I have to say the results are still great. No weight loss but my doctor is very pleased with the results of my BP.
Dr. Gordon Cameron is a prominent British joint and hypertension specialist. He is afflicted with high blood pressure himself and publishes the authoritative website www.bloodpressurehigh.com. Here's what he had to say about Breatheasy:
"The magic of Interactive Breathing with Music... I was lucky enough to receive a copy of the Breatheasy System recently, a scientifically designed method of coordinating music with your breathing."
"You only need to spend 15 minutes a day with the system to obtain benefits in your blood pressure. I found that it also improved my sleep patterns and helped me to relax. It's easy to learn and inexpensive compared to some other methods of blood pressure control without medication."
"Breatheasy relies on the fact that slow breathing has the ability to relax blood vessels and thus reduce blood pressure. I check my own blood pressure regularly and the system certainly helped me."

"I ordered the CDs and have been using them for about 3 months. I am quite amazed at the wonderful results. I have been trying for years to beat high blood pressure with healthy diet and exercise but slow breathing was the missing link!"
"I used to have a BP (with medication) of 130/90 on average (sometimes MUCH higher). I now have been able to reduce one of the medications prescribed (Atenolol) almost completely and my average BP is about 110/75 with a pulse around 72! Sometimes the readings are even lower."
"I feel wonderful and also continue to walk 1-2 miles daily combined with slow breathing (I often do the breathing if I am unable to sleep or while I am driving). It makes me feel very calm and grounded and all I can say is that I am very pleased with your program!"

"After the adverse effects of pharmaceutical drugs... I HAVE NOT used any pharmaceutical preparations at all. I now rely solely on Breatheasy."
"The ONLY problem with Breatheasy is that you find it difficult to believe that something so simple and easy to use actually works. My advice is to have faith... and believe in Breatheasy because IT WORKS!"

Update:
Today, 14th April, 2009, my bvlood pressure was - 117/79 with pulse 60, at 10 am. My average of the last 30 readings, was 115/77 with pulse 67.
(Posted by William on the blood pressure blog he started when he began using the BreatheEasy System. Read William's full story on the "Real-Life Results" page.)
"I purchased your program about 4-6 months ago when I was first told by a nurse I had high bp at 170/115. I did not stick with it and got caught up in the trap of going on meds my doctor prescribed. That began a 3 month journey of severe stomach problems and side effects that made it almost impossible to work."
"Today I was put on the third style of bp med as the first two did not bring it below 155/105 and many times it would creep up to the 170 range. I also began to not be able to fall asleep due to the meds, which clearly makes things worse."
"Tonight I decided to try the program again. Prior to trying the program I had 3 readings all around 155/103. After 15 minutes of the music and breathing my reading was 130/88... I have never been that low. I took another reading 20 minutes later to see if it would stay and it was 121/74!"
"Clearly there is something to this, and I now going to use it everyday no matter what."
"Thank you for this product. I can now see my stress had increased my rate and reduced my exhaling."
"My cardiologist even suggested today to look into anxiety meds.... thank god I tried this first!"

"My doctor put me on Atenolol and at first I thought it was the answer. My heart rate and blood pressure did go down but then my energy and mood also took a nosedive. And my weight went up. I couldn't stand it!"
"I'm so happy I discovered Breatheasy. My blood pressure and pulse are normal now even though I quit the beta-blockers weeks ago. It also helps keep me level-headed but without taking the edge off like the drugs did."

UPDATE: January 17, 2009...
Since getting off Atenolol I've never looked back. I still do slow breathing nearly every day but now I usually use my own music... Thank you for making this possible with your fantastic program!
"I can't begin to tell you how much your system has already helped me. I started doing the download right away and within just a couple of days my blood pressure was down quite a bit of the time lower than I've seen it in years.
My average is somewhere around 155/85 but it often goes a lot higher to around 190/90 but that's not often. Now it is around 126/70 at least part of the day. I can't believe how fast it worked on me. I put off taking meds for 3 years but finally decided that I had to do something. Thank you so much.

UPDATE: August 20 (six weeks later)...
I am still very thrilled with your program. It's very hard to believe that something that is so enjoyable to do can lower your blood pressure so much, but it does. My blood pressure is in the 120's or the lower 130's most all of the time now over 72. As I had mentioned before it had gone as high as 190 over 90 but usually averaged around 155 or 160 over 85, so I have had a dramatic change thanks to your music."
UPDATE: August 2008 (the following year):
Linda contacted me to report that after getting control of her blood pressure with Breatheasy last year she stopped doing slow breathing and, eventually, her blood pressure crept up again. I promptly sent her our latest edition. She replied as follows...
"I do have good news. Again my blood pressure has gone down quickly since I started listening to your CD's. I started using them again a little over a month ago. Before we left on our trip my pressure dropped most of the time to where I like it. I was afraid that it would go up while we were on vacation but it did not. I'm very lucky that it works so fast on me."

"I just want to tell you how satisfied I am with your product."
"Due to persistent breathlessness, 18 months ago my Doctor sent me off for an exercise ECG. I was diagnosed with hypertension and LVH on my heart. As a fighting fit man in his mid thirties this news devastated me. I was immediately put on medication (which didn’t work, but gave me nasty side effects)."
"Of course, I researched hypertension and LVH on the internet and became terribly concerned over my health. Then I came across your product, tried the demo, and purchased it straight away."
"When I was first diagnosed, my average blood pressure was around 180/90! My doctor couldn’t understand why a young fit man could produce such high readings. I was blown away and developed a serious anxiety problem. With some further medical help from my GP, and daily use of Breatheasy, I am happy to inform you that I am now seeing an average reading of 135/75. This is a fantastic result which I hope to further improve over time."
Thank you for helping me to reclaim my life with your fantastic product!

"What a lovely personal reply which thoroughly addresses my queries - thank you."
"You may wish to know that I'm already noticing good progress with your system. I don't know how just 15 minutes of correct breathing per day works so quickly to develop better habits but I'm already breathing more slowly throughout the whole day."

UPDATE: April 13, 2010...
Good news indeed! I had my BP checked yesterday at the doctor and after three weeks of practising my Breathe Easy CDs I was sent packing with a reading of 134/84."
"I also managed a diastolic of 80 but the systolic in this case had gone up to 140 so swings and roundabouts. The Health Assistant even wondered why I'd come so I had to explain that after Xmas I'd had a high of 150/100 and was told to keep a check on it."
"That is just a fabulous result. Thank you so much. I hadn't changed any of my other habits either, so I was really impressed."
"Just would like to tell you how much I am enjoying your breathing program and how it has helped me. I have been on 2 blood pressure pills and the 2nd one made me very tired and inactive. After your breathing sessions I can now tolerate the medication and feel normal again."
"I have more energy, sleep better at night without aches and pains. I used to walk slumped over at the shoulders and bent at the waist. I now walk holding my shoulders back. I can now work in the yard without my heart palpatating. If I start getting tired I just breath correctly a few times and it is like fuel in my tank. I feel like it is a miracle!!!"
"And breathing to your music is something I look forward to."

UPDATE: March 10, 2010...
Sorry I haven't responded to you sooner, but my mother was very ill with a stroke and I have been taking care of her.
I am still getting good results with my energy levels. I tell people if I wasn't using your breathng method, I wouldn't have been able to take care of my mother.
The times I quit using it for a while because I was too busy, I really lost steam and had to start breathing again."
Thank you for your fast response and corrections in mailing. I received the shipment today, by U.S. mail-service. I am very happy about your customer service, as the way you responded is rare in our fast times. Thank you again, it leaves a long lasting good impression.

"I was a little skeptical at first about trying the Breatheasy System. I have always known that slowing down your breathing will relax you but I did have doubts about how it can lower your blood pressure."
"Well, I decided to give it a try and I absolutely love it! It is SO relaxing. It only takes 15 minutes a day and I can easily lower my BP about 20-30 points after one session."
