One of the most dangerous but little-known
outcomes of high blood
pressure is an
enlarged heart.
Did you know that an enlarged heart is one of the most common but little-known symptoms of high blood pressure? It’s obvious when you think about it: the heart is a muscle and just like any muscle it grows bigger and tougher the more it gets over-worked. And there’s nothing that overworks the heart more than hypertension!
High blood pressure increases the load on the heart
causing it to grow
larger.
People with chronic high blood pressure are often diagnosed with “left ventricular hypertrophy”, or LVH, the most common form of enlarged heart. The right side of the heart only pumps blood through the lungs while the left side has to work harder by pumping blood throughout the body. This leads to the left side more frequently becoming enlarged, or hypertrophied.
“Hypertrophied” muscles like biceps or pecs might be great for some people, but not an enlarged heart. It’s one of the most common causes of heart failure. People with LVH have a risk of heart attack four times that of people with high blood pressure but a normal sized heart. As if that’s not scary enough, they also have 12 times the risk of stroke.
The cause and effect between hypertension and enlarged heart is so great that virtually everyone with unchecked high blood pressure for any length of time can expect some degree of hypertrophy. And if this is not treated and controlled the inevitable result is bound to be disastrous.
Luckily, there’s also some good news: both the condition and the damage is reversible >The ability of the heart to recover and regenerate itself is truly astounding. Hearts that have suffered total failure have mended themselves while resting “off duty”, relieved by external blood pumps.
Your heart also needs a break to recover. Of course you can’t replace it, even temporarily, but the next best thing is to lower your blood pressure to take some of that huge strain off of your heart. And by the time you have LVH you’re probably looking at medications.
Many natural methods can reduce blood pressure
but some cases of enlarged
heart call for
immediate medication.
As a natural health advocate I encourage lifestyle improvements and other natural methods for blood pressure control. But the dangers of enlarged heart demand fast and even drastic action. ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers are two common blood pressure medications capable of not only lowering blood pressure but also of reducing heart muscle size.
Of course drugs have side effects as well as their own risks. So I also urge everyone dealing with high blood pressure, even those requiring medication, to also take up lifestyle changes and other natural methods that can help to control blood pressure in the long term.
That’s because the old adage that blood pressure medication is for life is a myth. It doesn’t have to be that way. Many people have used medications to help them reverse a dangerous condition like enlarged heart only to replace them over time with natural methods.
If you’re struggling with uncontrolled high blood pressure you may unknowingly be big-hearted. Take a load off your chest with lower blood pressure.
Prevent the risks of both enlarged heart and the medications used to treat it by getting natural lower blood pressure now.
